Robson Conceicao the gold medalist no one knows.

Conceicao won gold at the 2016 Olympic games and signed with Top Rank to begin his professional career. You would think that a gold medalist would be pushed quite quickly but he hasn’t made any impact at all in the professional game so far compared to what he did in the amateurs.

I don’t understand why this is considering he hasn’t really put a foot wrong so far in the professional game. Perhaps its because hes from Brazil and Top Rank think they have people that are more marketable to properly promote in the division hes in. However I personally don’t think this would be the reason yet I can’t figure out why hes being moved so slowly.

I want too see him more active as he hasn’t fought for 9 months and at the age of 31 needs to get a big fight soon. From reports I’ve seen it does seem he had a fight scheduled but it was cancelled due to the Corona Virus which is unfortunate.

Hopefully when the Virus finally dies down he can start making big step ups in his career as many 2016 Olympians are now reaching world level.

No boxing this week and for the foreseeable future.

As of today there aren’t any boxing cards on this weekend as the whole world has effectively gone on lock down due to the Corona Virus. It also doesn’t look like we will get any boxing for at least 3 months if not longer. I think we will see quite a few boxers not return to the sport after boxing resumes because they have gotten a normal job and can’t be bothered to do both when boxing can be cancelled at any time.

This is a very short weekly preview because there isn’t any boxing but I’ll still post a preview next week even if its just similar to this. Stay safe everyone.

5 realistic fights for Julio Cesar Martinez

Martinez in the last year has become one of the rising stars of the sport and more recently became a world champion. He has a good resume for how long hes been world champion with names such as Cristofer Rosales, Jay Harris, Charlie Edwards and Andrew Selby. Hes beaten three of those and really should have beaten Edwards but unfortunately it was a no contest after Martinez hit Edwards while he was on the floor. He has pretty much wiped out all the British Flyweights with only a fight with Sunny Edwards remaining. I think he has the opportunity to build an impressive resume at Fly weight with how the division is right now.

The first fight I want too see him in is Moruti Mthalane which would be a unification of the WBC and IBF titles. Mthalane is one of the most underrated fighters in the sport and could easily win this fight. How he is still performing at the top level at the age of 37 I don’t know but it makes his career all the more impressive. I don’t think this fight would be hard to make as its a big fight for both and at 37 Mthalane won’t want to waste time. I really want this fight to be made before one of them loses their title which would most likely be Mthalane. He is currently with MTK so it wouldn’t surprise me if they persuaded him not to take the fight and instead fight some of their boxers in Britain.

The second fight I want to see him in is versus Artem Dalakian in a WBC and WBA unification. This is the second best fight to make in the division as Dalakian is an undefeated champion who possesses good boxing skills. Dalakian since winning his title has been facing very mediocre competition in Ukraine which has resulted in most people forgetting he exists. I don’t know how motivated Dalakian is to get big fights as he seems content to defend his title versus no hopers in Ukraine but I would love to see him in fights with the other top guys of his division.

The third fight I want too see him in is versus Angel Acosta. Both are huge punchers and this could lead to an amazing fight sort of like Martinez versus Harris but on steroids. Acosta is a former champion himself so that also helps out Martinez’s resume and he would bring the whole Island of Puerto Rico with him. I want too see Acosta in the mix at fly weight and I think a fight with Martinez is the best fight he can get.

The fourth fight is McWilliams Arroyo who has fought notable names such as Kazuto Ioka, Carlos Cuadras, Roman Gonzalez and Amnat Ruenroeng. Hes never been stopped and will really go for it over 12 rounds. If Martinez could KO him then it would be a good statement and also just beating him would be a good name on his resume. I like this fight a lot and it shouldn’t be hard to make as Arroyo is high in the WBC rankings and he doesn’t seem to have a lot of people asking to fight him.

The fifth person I would like too see Martinez fight is Francisco Rodriguez Jr. He hasn’t lost since 2015 and is on an excellent run right now. Hes fought good names in Roman Gonzalez and Donnie Nietes and one of the best things is hes only 26 so hes still in his prime. If the fight did take place then I imagine it would happen in Mexico as both are Mexican and it could be Martinez’s home coming defense that could lead into a classic rivalry between the two if the first fight is competitive enough.

Martinez is one of my favourite fighters right now and I like that hes taking hard fights. The division hes in could potentially have a lot of classic match ups as long as the fights get made. Heres to hoping the Corona Virus goes away so we can see these match ups and most importantly boxing again.

Josh Warrington to unify versus Xu Can

Its been announced that terms have been agreed for Warrington to face Xu Can next in what will be an IBF and WBA featherweight unification. Can is currently the regular champion but with Santa Cruz moving up he will be elevated to be the main world champion at featherweight. The WBA like usual have screwed around and so its hard to know whos the actual world champion and who has what is in effect an interim title.

I’m happy that Xu Can is going to become full champion as he has actually been fighting good competition and won the belt in an upset so you can’t say he doesn’t deserve to be a world champion. I also like this fight stylistically as both throw massive amounts of punches and it could be an all out war. I have high expectations for this fight and hopefully it delivers as in my opinion its one of the most fan friendly match ups in the featherweight division.

Warrington went back and forth with Shakur Stevenson (current WBO champion) but it doesn’t appear the bout will happen due to the sides not reaching an agreement. Stevenson when he heard about the news said that he’d be going up to 130 now that Warrington had “decided to fight an interim champ with two losses”. I don’t know the particulars of why this fight wasn’t made but it seems it came down to money and Stevenson wanting more to fight in the UK. A lot of people have said Warrington is ducking Stevenson but I don’t think this makes sense as its only Warringtons side that have made offers. Why has Top Rank not made an offer for Warrington to fight Stevenson in the USA?. I personally don’t think either fighter is ducking each other and in general I think very few fighters are actually scared to fight someone. The reason i’m defending Warrington is because he gets a lot of abuse online for someone that has his resume.

I’m excited for this fight and when tickets get announced I may end up going as long as the under card is decent as well. Whoever wins this fight will be the number one in the division as both Stevenson and Russell Jr are moving up. The winner will also likely have to face IBF mando Kid Galahad which could lead to a dreadful fight as Galahad’s style is awful. if Warrington beats Xu Can, Galahad again and then unifies once more then I think he breaks the p4p top 10 and his resume at featherweight becomes unquestionable.

Should professional boxers be allowed to compete in the amateurs and do they have an advantage?

This has been a hot topic in boxing for a while now as more and more professionals go back to the amateurs for various reasons. For some its because their country has asked them too and for others its simply because they still want to achieve their Olympic dream.

Most professional boxers that go back to the amateur code don’t do very well as it is really is a completely different sport and the top amateurs will not lose to a pro over 3 rounds. Professional boxers are no longer used to the fast paced rounds of the amateurs and being a pro doesn’t give them extra strength or anything it just means they’ve boxed for money.

I’ve seen some people most notable the head of the WBC says its a disgrace and dangerous for professionals to go back but I disagree strongly. No one has ever explained how some one going pro gives them an advantage all people say is its unfair. Going pro doesn’t suddenly make you a better boxer in fact it makes you worse when you go back to the amateurs because your not used to that style. Saying that professionals have some advantage over top amateurs doesn’t make any sense and is just a case of moral outrage from people that can’t think logically.

The only reason this has become a big thing is because Bakhodir Jalolov went back to the amateurs and KO’d a top American amateur and the WBC president was outraged for no reason. Jalolov’s 6 professional bouts didn’t magically give him huge power and timing he already had that. This outrage doesn’t make any sense but then again its boxing where for some reason the more idiotic and slimy you are the higher you get.

Chayaphon Moonsri : boxing’s longest active world champion

Moonsri has held the same WBC minimum weight title since November the 6th 2014. As of today he has held it for over 5 years which is an incredible feat no matter what division your in. He has never unified however and only fought in Thailand which along with the division hes in is why hes not very well known. This piece is more about how hes the longest active reigning world champion right now.

To put it into prospective he has reigned through the last year of Obama’s presidency and almost through all of Trumps first term. In the UK hes out lasted David Cameron and Therasa May and is now running along side Boris Johnson. One of the only other champs near him was Wilder who was recently defeated which leaves Moonsri in a good lead on anybody else. Even long reigning champions like Jerwin Ancajas have only held their belts since late 2016. Being a champion for 5 years is very rare as at some point most boxers slip up or find an opponent that is just simply better than them. In Wilder’s case he was only able to reign so long because his competition was bad for most of his defenses. When he stepped up he struggled and within two years of mixing it with the top guys was beat.

I have noticed a trend among the long lasting champions which is that they often hold a WBC belt and I wonder if this is because the WBC are well known to bend their rules to protect the champions and aren’t that strict with mandatory’s. It could also be that many people view it as the most prestigious belt and so they don’t go to unify because they feel they don’t need too.

I’m not sure how much longer Moonsri will hold the belt for as he is 34 now and at minimum weight that is ancient. He also appears to be making a move to fight in the USA where he won’t have home advantage. I want to see him unify before some challenger ends his reign.

5 fighters that Munguia could fight next.

As we now know Munguia isn’t going to fight Demetrius Andrade next we can now look at some potential opponents that he could face instead. Andrade is going to be fighting Liam Williams next which is a shame as he was going to be top of the list of realistic options for Munguia. He’s only 23 and was pushed into a world championship very quickly because the opportunity arose. This mean’t that hes had to do his learning on the job and now that hes not champion hes got some time to take developmental fights versus top 30 guys at middleweight. I’m going to be choosing realistic names he could actually face as we all know due to promotional sides lots of the best fights can’t be made.

At number 5 is Brandon Adams a former title challenger who is still in the prime of his career. The reason I think Adams would be a good fight for Munguia is because hes challenged for a title before but is also very beatable and will allow Munguia to test out what Erik Morales has been teaching him. He shouldn’t pose a huge threat to Munguia but still enough to make him work and Adams is a top 30 middleweight right now so its the perfect time to fight him. He went the distance with Jermall Charlo so if Munguia could stop him it would look good. The downsides of this match up is that Adams is only ranked in the WBC and isn’t very well known outside of losing to Charlo and winning the contender series.

Brandon Adams

The 4th fighter on this list is D’Mitrius Ballard who is currently 20-0-1. He has decent power but perhaps not at the elite level and should like Adams let Munguia work on improving. He will also be highly motivated because if he wins this fight then he would become a big name and likely get a title shot. I think this could be semi-competitive for 5 or so rounds before Munguia takes over and gets the KO. Another benefit of this match up is that Golden Boy get Ballard a big fight as he is one of their fighters. Another bonus is that hes undefeated and this not only helps sell the fight but undefeated fighters often have a bit extra in them to push through hardship because they don’t know what losing feels like yet. If he fights Adams or Ballard I’d like him to be very active and fight another 20-30 guy within a couple of months.

D’Mitrius Ballard

At number 3 is Kanat Islam a 27-0 fighter from Kazakhstan. Islam has had two fights back after a two year break and is looking to get back to title contention and a fight with Munguia would do that. Kanat would test Munguia and while he didn’t look great last time out I think he would be much better when given a big opportunity versus Munguia. He’s ranked third with the WBO which is useful as that is likely the belt that Munguia will go for soon. He also brings an undefeated record and a whole new fan base from Kazakhstan. He has good power which will make for an entertaining fight and thats what we want these fights to be while Munguia is learning. The whole point is to fight small names in the division that will give him good tests before he settles into middleweight and challenges one of the champions.

Kanat Islam

Maciej Sulecki is at number two on the list because hes a good fighter that has gone twelve rounds with both Andrade and Daniel Jacobs. His last fight was him challenging for the WBO title so this would be one of the better tests for Munguia at middleweight. Sulecki will be known in the USA because of his fights versus Jacobs and Andrade and will bring the Polish fan base with him. I think while Sulecki will test Munguia I also think that he can be KO’d as he has gone down in almost all of his big fights and if Munguia catches him like Andrade did he won’t let him off the hook. If he could say beat him by KO in 6 rounds it would be a good statement to the division and also be impressive to us fans.

Maciej Sulecki

The number one fighter I want too see him against at middleweight is Tureano Johnson. He would bring constant pressure to Munguia and really give him a fight. It would be very entertaining and also a fight that Munguia could lose. Johnson also deserves a big fight from Golden Boy after he pulled off the upset versus Jason Quigley last year and this fight would suffice. I think Johnson is the best fighter he can currently get at middleweight and hes also a fighter that Munguia could wear down over 12 rounds and potentially get a stoppage which would be impressive.

Tureano Johnson

Those are the five fighters that I think Munguia could realistically fight next and would all be entertaining fights though the top 3 would be much preferred. I think for being only 23 Munguia is a very good fighter and now that hes being given time to grow as a boxer he can become another Mexican great if everything turns out right. Hes also always in entertaining fights and KO’s his opponents most of the time which will always make me root for a fighter.

2016 British Olympians edge towards world level as pro’s.

Most of the 2016 Olympians have gone pro and are now making impressive starts to their pro careers. A few like Galal Yafai and Pat McCormack have stayed in the amateur system to try and qualify for another Olympics something that Yafai has achieved in the last week. The rest of the 2016 team turned over to the pro’s and look to fight for world titles sooner rather than later.

I’m going to start off with Nicola Adams who achieved huge amounts in the amateurs including winning two gold medals at the Olympics. She turned over to the pro ranks with expectations to dominate it like she had as an amateur however her career was marred with injuries and lay offs. She did end up becoming the WBO Fly weight champion though had to retire after her first defence because of an injury to her eye. That defense ended in a draw in which many felt she should have lost. She was the first out of the British 2016 Olympians to win a world title and while her pro career was cut short she at least achieved winning a world title.

Nicola Adams

Savannah Marshal was also a very successful amateur and while she didn’t medal at the Olympics like Nicola Adams I think she will be much more successful in the paid ranks. She has had 8 fights so far and not struggled with any of them which isn’t surprising as at the higher weight classes in womens boxing the talent pool is quite small. Theres not a lot of step up fights you can have, you fight the people near the bottom and then jump into a world title fight because there isn’t really an in between. That is also what Marshall will do when she fights for her first world title on the 27th of June in Newcastle. I think she will likely win it and then run through her division before trying to make a big fight with Claressa Shields who she beat in the amateurs.

Savannah Marshall

Joe Joyce achieved a silver medal at the 2016 Olympics and is looking to replicate the success of Anthony Joshua and other British heavyweights who medalled at the Olympics(perhaps not Audley Harrison). He’s made an impressive start to his professional career with his best win so far being Bryant Jennings. He is going to be fighting Daniel Dubois in an all British clash at the 02 in July. If he beats Dubois people would make noise about him getting a title shot but with how the heavyweight division is locked up right now it may take longer than he wants to get a title shot. He is 34 and if he loses to Dubois which the bookies expect him too then its difficult to see where he goes in his career. No promoter is making him their priority and thats why he has had to resort to fighting Dubois on PPV as all momentum in his career was fizzling out. The Joyce versus Dubois fight is excellent and even if he loses he will at least leave a legacy for the British public.

Joe Joyce

Lawrence Okolie looks like hes going to be fighting for a world title in his next fight after passing every test put in front of him so far. He can be painful to watch sometimes but he has to get massive credit for being willing to fight anyone. He’ll be taking a massive step up in his next fight and I wish him all the best as the UK needs new world champions as some of the old guard are retiring or look like they could lose their titles soon. I also think as he gets more experience he won’t fight like hes a heavy handed octopus as much.

Lawrence Okolie

Joshua Buatsi has looked like one of the best talents to come out of the 2016 squad and looks to be fighting for a world title within the next year. I do think he could have been stepped up sooner as he has blasted through everyone that has been put in front of him so far. He was supposed to be fighting in a WBA eliminator versus Blake Caparello but had to pull out due to illness. He was then supposed to return in March but due to the Corona Virus that card has now been cancelled. I think that hes one of the 2016 Olympians that is capable of winning a world title even though he is in a stacked division. I know he’ll likely take a tune up before a big fight but he really needs to be tested on a world level like other Olympians are.

Joshua Buatsi

Josh Kelly at the start of his pro career looked like he could go all the way but after a few average performances it doesn’t look like hes especially close to a title shot. His draw with Ray Robinson is the only flaw in his record but it has set him back quite a bit. He had one comeback fight afterwards where he didn’t look great versus a fighter moving up a weight class and was supposed to be fighting an even bigger test in David Avanesyan in March but the show got cancelled. This was his test too see if he could get to world level or not and with it being delayed it means it’ll take him even longer however that could be a good thing as the world titles are held up at the moment. The only one he had a realistic chance of fighting is Terence Crawford because he has no opponents to face. Errol Spence Jr is coming off an injury and has better opponents lined up and there is no chance that Pacquiao would fight him as hes also got better opponents to fight. Hopefully his fight gets rescheduled as with a win there he would announce himself on the world scene.

Josh Kelly

Qais Ashfaq is a 2016 Olympian that is going under the radar compared to others. I think this is likely because he is in a lower weight class which is a shame as he seems to be just as talented as the rest of the 2016 squad. He hasn’t put a foot wrong in his pro career so far and if he gets the push behind him I can see him getting a title shot within the next year and a half though the division he is in is stacked at world level. I’d like too see him be more active and also step up his level of competition a bit which to be fair he has been doing recently. I don’t think he’ll win a world title because of how stacked it is at world level but him versus Brad Foster for the British title would be a great fight and one I’d be in attendance for.

Qais Ashfaq

Muhammed Ali (unfortunate name) has recently turned pro under Frank Warren and won his debut after his opponent was disqualified. I don’t know how far he can go yet as we haven’t seen him fight enough in the pro ranks. He did serve a ban for a failed drugs test but that seems to be sorted out now. Warren is good at building his guys and spotting talent so he should be in good hands. A notable point about the 2016 squad is that almost all of them signed with Eddie Hearn and this perhaps highlights the fact that Hearn isn’t that good at spotting talent and instead tries to sign all of the Olympians and top GB amateurs while Warren is better at spotting talent. I’ll go deeper into this in another article as I think its an interesting topic.

Muhammed Ali

The final 2016 Olympian is Anthony Fowler and like a lot of the other 2016 Olympians looked extremely good in his first 8 or 9 fights. He also looked like a massive puncher however once he stepped up to British level he showed he isn’t nearly as big of a puncher as advertised. He was involved in a classic all British fight with Scott Fitzgerald which even in losing created a legacy with British fans. Hes bounced back with wins over a faded Brian Rose and a few others but is now looking to fight Fitzgerald in a rematch for the British title. He isn’t very close to a world title but I do like that he has the attitude that hes going to clean up domestically and win the British before he moves on to world level. I don’t think he’ll win a world title and i’m not sure he gets past Scott Fitzgerald but if he does its because he trains harder than Scott who by his own admission struggles with staying on a diet and training.

Anthony Fowler

We will see just how good the British Olympians are in the next year or two as they progress in their careers and closer to world level. I’m not sure how many will become world champions but i’m confident at least one of them will do. As the next Olympic games comes near it adds extra pressure to them as they will no longer be the focus of their promoters as they try and build the new crop of Olympians. By the time a new Olympic squad is ready to turn pro the previous one has normally entered the world scene and while some of the 2016 Olympians are there quite a few are lagging behind or have failed in one of their first tests.

Tibo Monabesa versus Toto Landero and nothing else.

If you thought last weeks boxing schedule was small then your in for a bigger surprise this week. Across the world there are under 15 cards taking place and I can’t confirm whether any of those 15 will actually happen. The only significant fight that is scheduled to take place this week comes from Indonesia so it might actually be taking place though I’m not entirely sure.

Tibo Monabesa the former IBO Light Fly champion and an opponent of Hiroto Kyoguchi is fighting Toto Landero for a WBC International title. Landero is a decent fighter but has lost almost all his fights at the top level though his win over Joel Lino recently is good. Either way he shouldn’t have enough to beat Monabesa especially on away soil.

As always I hope you enjoy the boxing and all the boxers return home safely. I’d be surprised if you can watch any boxing live this week which is actually a bit depressing and it doesn’t look like we will be able to watch any for months to come. Stay safe and catch up on old fights!

Meet the next set of heavyweight contenders.

While this current heavyweight era is good it is still filled with a lot of old fighters like Pulev and Povetkin and the real boom of this era will be when they retire and the new guard come in. I’m going to introduce you too some fighters that will likely be involved at the top level in the next few years as the heavyweight guard changes.

The first fighter is Filip Hrgovic a 6,6 Croatian who is currently 10-0 with 7 of those wins coming by way of knockout. He’s a 2016 Olympian and has a very good amateur background. I’d be surprised if he doesn’t fight for a world title in his career and he has the potential to win one. His positives is that hes technically sound and has good power but on the negative side is a bit upright and stiff. He’s only 27 which for a heavyweight is young however I expect him to become a contender within the next year.

The next fighter is yet another 2016 Olympian and thats Efe Ajagba. Hes 6,6 with an 85inch reach and has massive power. He isn’t very developed defensively right now and lacks head movement. This can all be worked on as hes only 25 which like I mentioned earlier is very young for a heavyweight. I’m not very high on Ajagba at the moment but he does have the potential to win a world title in his career if he works on his defense and loosens up a bit.

Daniel Dubois is most likely the best prospect in the division as at the age of 22 is already looking to get into title contention. He has a very good jab which he uses often and has good power. His timing is normally good and he has good fundamentals. He does telegraph his shots sometimes and like a lot of the heavyweights on this list doesn’t have the best head movement though it isn’t terrible. There lots of questions to be answered about Dubois such as how his stamina holds up in the late rounds and how his chin is but he looks to be a future world champion.

Frank Sanchez is a Cuban heavyweight that out of all the new prospects has the best movement and pure boxing skills. He’s not the biggest puncher in the world but he holds enough power to stop people from just walking forward. I rate Sanchez quite highly and think he can give a lot of heavyweights problems but the question is if he can avoid other peoples power for 12 rounds if he needs too. He took Joey Dawejko too school in his last fight which was a good sign as if you struggle with Joey then its unlikely you reach the top. Dawejko isn’t good and people need to stop glorifying him off a sparring rumour.

Tony Yoka won gold at the 2016 Olympics and has gone perfect as a pro so far. He’s only 7 fights in because he had to serve a ban for missing multiple drug tests. He has good power with clear boxing ability which could take him far. I think he can get to a world title and historically gold medalists have done very well in the heavyweight division so hes certainly one too look out for.

Arslanbek Makhmudov is a 10-0 fighter from Russia who now lives in Canada. He has massive power and all 10 of his victories have come inside the distance. He is one of the only prospects that I would be confident putting in with a Pulev or Wach etc. He needs to be stepped up as hes clearly very good and could be in title contention now. I think he’ll win a world title as long as boxing politics doesn’t get in the way and he doesn’t get the fights he needs.

Junior Fa is 19-0 and from New Zealand. He has better power than his record suggests and good boxing skills. Negatives are going off the eye test right now I can’t see him causing much trouble for the top heavyweights. He was good amateur so perhaps he just needs to be stepped up but I didn’t like the way Devin Vargas backed him up at times.

Ivan Dychko is one of the best prospects in the heavyweight division. Hes a giant at 6,9 has real power and is also a fluid boxer with good movement. All the ingredients to be a world champion but hes been inactive and doesn’t seem to be getting the fight dates he needs.

The last prospect is Apti Davtaev a russian heavyweight who is currently 20-0-1. He has 19 wins by knockout which shows he has decent power. Hes been very active recently which is good and the only big criticism I have of him is that he isn’t that hard to hit but at the same time most heavyweights are easy to hit which is what makes the division fun.

In the next few years you’ll see these fighters either make it to the top or become top 15 to 30 guys who are brought in as opponents. I think the next wave of heavyweights will transform this the heavyweight division into a true new golden era especially combined with the champions we have now.
