Steve Claggett versus David Theroux breakdown

This should be a fun competitive fight between two Canadian super lightweights. This is one semi-final of a super lightweight tournament between all Canadian fighters.

Steve Claggett is much more experienced and has had a lot of competitive fights against good competition. He’s got good boxing skills combined with decent power and an awkward style. He’s also been much more active than Theroux who has only had three fights in the last two years and hasn’t fought for over a year.

David Theroux

I think Steve Claggett should be able to use his experience to beat Theroux on points who is inactive and has lost to fighters who aren’t nearly as good as Claggett.

Javier Fortuna versus Antonio Lozada Torres breakdown

This is a decent tune up fight for Fortuna but one where he should shine and get the knockout. Torres is best known for knocking out Felix Verdejo but that was over two years ago and in his recent fights hes looked like hes heavily on the decline. I think this will be a clear crossroads fight where Fortuna shows hes still world level and can have a big fight next while Torres goes back to being an opponent.

Antonio Lozada Torres

I think Javier Fortuna will win by knockout in the 7th round due to Torres being on the decline and Fortuna being a better fighter than him anyway.

Liam Davies versus Sean Cairns breakdown

I think this is the hardest fight to predict on this card as both are area level fighters and not much really separates them. Davies might be the slightly better boxer but Cairns has more experience and has fought the better level of competition. Davies does have a win over Brett Fidoe while Cairns lost to him but neither looked good against Fidoe who is a good fighter himself though you wouldn’t know by his record.

I can’t see much separating them so i’m going to predict this fight ends in a draw though it could come down to who has the better stamina as neither has gone past six rounds.

Fabio Wardley versus Richard Lartey breakdown

I think this should be a fun fight between two heavyweights who are just below British title level. Wardley has been progressing nicely and seems to be the dark horse of the British heavyweight scene while Lartey has had a few fights against British prospects and gave his all in both fights.

Fabio Wardley has decent boxing skills and like a lot of heavyweights clearly has power. His defence seems decent though he hasn’t faced many people that would test it. He hasn’t gone many rounds so I don’t know how good his stamina is however hes shown no signs of gassing out yet. He uses the uppercut a lot which is unusual for a heavyweight but it works well for him and perhaps takes his opponents off guard as they are expecting the usual massive hooks.

Richard Lartey has some power himself but often struggles to land it as he isn’t technically very good. His chin is solid and hes not afraid of anyone as he went to war with Daniel Dubois and didn’t do too badly. His combinations are mostly limited to 1-2’s and big punches which a lot of boxers can see coming from a mile away. Hes a good character and always turns up to really fight so even if he loses this one I’d like too see him get more opportunities.

Richard Lartey

I think Fabio Wardley will win this fight by 7th or 8th round knockout due to being a bit better technically and also seeming to have more power. I think Lartey isn’t defensively responsible enough and doesn’t have enough variation in his punch selection to beat Wardley.

Conor Benn versus Sebastian Formella breakdown

This is an excellent fight and a real step up for Benn where he has a high possibility of losing. Benn has progressed from being a sort of side show on under cards as Nigel Benn’s son to a solid dangerous domestic contender. Sebastian Formella is a European contender who’s only loss came to Shawn Porter who is a world class fighter. Formella went the distance in that fight and while he barely won a round he didn’t stop trying and showed that hes clearly only just below world level.

Conor Benn has a lot of power and has been working on his boxing skills though they still aren’t great. He always comes in great shape and is clearly very dedicated. I think for him to win this fight he needs to hurt Formella early and put fear into him so Formella is hesitant to throw punches and Benn can control the action.

Sebastian Formella is a good boxer though lacks the raw power of Benn. He’s got good stamina and a great chin so I’d be surprised if Benn knocked him out where Porter couldn’t.

Sebastian Formella

I think Conor Benn will win a decision though it may be controversial. He’ll need to hurt Formella throughout the fight to win while all Formella needs to do is stick to his boxing and not get caught up in exchanges with the more powerful man.

Alen Babic versus Tom Little breakdown

This should be a fun fight as Babic always goes forward without a care for defence and Tom Little is an underrated boxer who has let himself down by not coming in shape for his fights. For this fight however he has come in career best shape and so it’ll be interesting too see just how improved he is.

Alen Babic has a simple style to explain. He walks forward throwing massive amounts of punches and doesn’t think about conserving energy as his only purpose is to put his enemies on the canvas and preferably out cold. His defence as you’d expect isn’t great and judging from his fights its likely that if you can get him past four rounds then he’ll be exhausted, the problem obviously is being able to withstand that whirlwind of fury from the Croatian for that time. So far no body has managed it though I think Tom Little has a good chance of going deep in this fight.

Tom Little is a decent boxer but lacks the power at heavyweight needed to go far. He normally doesn’t come in shape which is unfortunate as he has the skills to win an English title and perhaps challenge for the British in my opinion. In his recent fights he’s been put against the best heavyweight prospects in the world and unsurprisingly has been stopped by all of them though he gave a decent showing in the David Price fight. He isn’t the hardest to hit but compared to Babic’s other opponents hes Muhammed Ali if i’m being a bit judgmental.

Tom Little

I see this fight as a relative 50/50 where Babic will either wear Tom Little down in four or five rounds due to his pressure and relentless (Thanks Hearn!) punching or Little will use his feet and box his way to a close decision. Babic could also win a decision if he can bank the early rounds and perhaps steal one late on.

Otar Eranosyan versus Ignacio Perrin breakdown

This is a solid six round fight between Eranosyan who is a fast moving prospect and Perrin who has pushed fighters when hes gone on the road. Otar Eranosyan is 3-0 currently with all three of those wins coming in the last three months which shows a real dedication to the sport. Perrin hasn’t fought since a first round knockout loss last year in his native Argentina.

Otar Eranosyan is a very aggressive fighter who puts good educated pressure on his opponents using a variety of punches. I think his uppercuts are especially good and his work to the body has hurt multiple opponents.

Ignacio Perrin is also an aggressive fighter though isn’t quite as calculated in his attack. He throws a lot of punches while leaping into range instead of behind a jab and doesn’t plant his feet like Eranosyan does so struggles to get much power into them. He is tough and has gone the ten round distance once so I don’t expect him to get tired in this fight. He also had a decent amateur background and went to the 2016 Olympics where he lost in the first round. He hasn’t managed to turn his amateur success into pro success yet however.

Ignacio Perrin

I think Otar Eranosyan should be able to use his educated pressure fighting to win a six round decision. Even though hes had less pro fights he seems to have adjusted much better to the pro’s than Perrin as he sits down on his punches more.

Melvin Lopez versus Jesus Martinez breakdown

This should be a tune up fight for Lopez who was supposed to be fighting someone else but they pulled out. Jesus Martinez is a journeyman at this point who has lost every time hes stepped outside of his native Columbia. He’s also 39 and fighting a fresh 23 year old in the Bantamweight division where fighters notoriously age out quickly.

Jesus Martinez

I think Melvin Lopez should win this fight comfortably by stoppage within the first six rounds.

Eduardo Hernandez versus Eduardo Garza breakdown

This is the second comeback fight for Hernandez after a shocking upset loss at the hands of Roger Guitierrez last year. Garza is a domestic level fighter in the USA but will be inspired by Hernandez’s recent loss.

I think Eduardo Hernandez should be able to use his boxing skills and overwhelming volume of punches to break Garza down and stop him late. I still feel Hernandez is one of the best prospects in the sport and can become a champion later on in his career.

William Zepeda versus Roberto Ramirez breakdown

This is a good step up fight for Zepeda who so far in his career has looked like the best Mexican Lightweight prospect in the division. Roberto Ramirez is a solid campaigner in Mexico who’s only two losses came to Abel Ramos who is an established contender at welterweight and Carlos Ocampo who lost to Errol Spence for a title at welterweight.

William Zepeda is a pressure fighter who works behind a good jab. He is a southpaw and the straight left is one of his favorite punches. He throws a variety of shots which combined with his high output and great punch selection have got him 19 KO’s out of 21 victories. He’s not a one punch KO artist but he has above average power and breaks people down as the fight goes on. His defence is better than expected for someone with such an aggressive style though he’ll always be liable to being hit when he lets his combinations flow at mid range.

Roberto Ramirez is very tall for the weight which both benefits him and hinders him. It benefits him because he can wind up on uppercuts while his opponents can’t hit him however it hinders him because he stands tall and so opponents can land overhand rights and lefts at will. Considering his height you would think he would have a good jab and fight at range but he seems to prefer fighting on the inside or at mid range. He has decent power but not a great defence.

Roberto Ramirez

I think William Zepeda should be able to win a hard fought decision due to his aggressive style and good punch selection. Ramirez gets hit too much to get a decision here in my opinion so he’ll need to get the knockout.
