3 Fights I want too see in the Super Featherweight division.

While this Lock down is happening I’m going to go through each division and list 3 fights that I want too see that might not be as obvious as just saying I want unification fights(which we all do). First up is one of my favorite divisions which is the Super Featherweight division.

The first fight I want too see is Joseph Diaz versus Tevin Farmer 2. The first fight was quite entertaining and I’d happily see a second. Its also a fight that needs to happen as Farmer is to big of a name in the division to build up for another two years before getting a title shot. This fight is needed for this era of the super featherweights and I also think Tevin Farmer stands a better chance in this fight.

The second fight I want too see at Super Featherweight is Martin Joseph Ward versus Jono Carroll. I think Ward is an excellent fighter that just needs another chance at a big name and Carroll is a perfect fight for him. This is a good fight for Carroll as well as its a good domestic fight and I don’t see him getting a title shot any time soon. I think this fight would be highly entertaining and the winner would be closer to a title shot.

The third fight I want too see is Masayuki Ito versus Archie Sharp. Ito has an exciting style and Sharp often gets involved when he doesn’t need too so this fight could be fireworks. This is also a good comeback fight for Ito versus a good opponent whos highly ranked. Its also perfect for Sharp because its the step up in competition he needs before fighting for a world title and if he beats him its a good name on his resume. Hopefully this would get made in the UK as I would happily go as I find both of their fights entertaining normally.

Idea’s for boxing fans to do while in lockdown.

Its been a few weeks now and i’m sure that a lot of people have exhausted most of the great old fights and are now wondering what to do. If you don’t want to watch more boxing perhaps read a book or watch a new TV series, Anything to not go insane while we’re all cooped up at home. If you do want to watch more boxing I’ve got a few recommendations which will surely last you a while.

The first is to go to boxrec and choose a division and then go through every title fight that has ever happened in that division. This will take you a long time and you’ll likely find some hidden gems in there. You will also know a huge amount about that division and any fights taking place in that division will mean a lot more to you in the future.

My other recommendation is to go and find an active world champion that you haven’t watched and go through some of their fights. This is the perfect time to catch up on some of the lesser known champions and title fights you missed.

Those two recommendations should keep you busy for a long time and combined with watching TV series or doing other hobbies it should last you until the lock down is over.

What divisions should the WBSS choose for season 3?

The WBSS has almost wrapped up its second season with only the Cruiserweight final needing to take place. This would have already happened but like with most things was cancelled due to the Corona Virus. I’m a big fan of the world boxing super series as it always brings us great fights and often shines a spotlight on divisions which normally don’t get much attention. I’ve decided too look and pick out 3 divisions which I think they should pick for season 3.

First off is the light fly weight division which is completely stacked with talent. They would be able to get all the champions involved and money wouldn’t be a huge problem as even champions at the lower weights don’t get paid huge amounts. We could potentially get match ups of Kenshiro Teraji versus Hiroto Kyoguchi or Elwin Soto versus Felix Alvarado. These match ups all being in the same tournament would be incredible and thats why almost everyone thinks they should include this division next season.

One of my other picks would be the Super Featherweight division which is stacked full of talent but hasn’t had a unification in years. If they can get a few of the champions involved like Jamel Herring, Joseph Diaz and Miguel Berchelt then it could be great. They could also add people like Tevin Farmer, Oscar Valdez, Carl Frampton and Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov. It would have plenty of big names involved and whoever won would become a true star in the sport. The super Featherweight division also needs a unification to happen as they have been defending their individual titles for too long.

The final division which I would do is the Light heavyweights. The division has a lot of good names and could easily have a stacked 8 man tourney. We could also potentially see a undisputed champion at the weight which would be incredible. A fight between Artur Beterbiev and Dmitry Bivol is one that I need too see and this tourney could lead to that.

Financially these tournaments wouldn’t be too expensive though the Light Heavyweight one would be much more costly than the other two. Fans would appreciate the fights and we could see some incredible match ups which is what the world series of boxing is all about.

Competitive first fights where the rematch was one sided.

Normally when a fight is competitive the first time then the second will also be but in these cases they were utterly one sided.

First up is Emanuel Navarrete versus Isaac Dogboe. The first fight was still a clear win for Navarrete but Dogboe was atleast a bit competitive while in the rematch he was beat up for 12 rounds before being stopped and hasn’t fought since. That fight may well have taken a few years out of his career if he even decides to come back at all. Navarrete is a great fighter and currently one of my favourites to watch.

Next up is Brad Foster versus Lucien Reid. Their first fight was very competitive and ended up in a draw with many thinking that Reid just edged it. In the rematch Foster put on a dominant performance and Reid’s corner stopped the fight after 6 rounds. It was very impressive performance especially considering how competitive the first fight was.

The third and final fight is between Kenshiro Teraji and Ganigan Lopez. The first fight was very competitive and it could be argued either way. In the rematch Teraji destroyed Lopez inside two rounds which is stunning considering how competitive the first fight was. Teraji is also an excellent fighter.

I think one of the main reasons that the rematchs turned out different is because one set of fighters adapted and also understood their opponents while the others thought they could do the same thing they did in the first fight.

Yet again no boxing

For a second week we have no boxing again because of the Corona Virus. I’m going to use my thursday preview as a chance to implore you all to stay inside as much as possible and try to avoid other people. We all want this virus to end as quickly as possible and this is the best way to do it. Obviously if you have to go to work thats fine and I hope everyone that does stays as safe as possible. The NHS staff are heroes and all the people working in super markets also deserve recognition. I’ve worked stacking shelves on a night shift before and its hard enough when there isn’t a global pandemic.

I’ll be back next Thursday with my normal preview though I doubt they’ll be any boxing on. Until then stay safe and we’ll get past this.

Who currently has the most title defenses among active champions.

This is about who has the most defences of a title they currently hold and doesn’t count it as the same reign when people go up in weight.

I’m going to talk about a few names before getting to the person who has the most and if you’ve read my stuff before then you probably already know who the number one is.

The first person is Miguel Berchelt who currently has 6 defences of his WBC Super featherweight title. I think Berchelt is the best fighter at 130 and so he should be able to keep defending his belt for the foreseeable future. Hes only 28 so is still in his prime as well. I’d like too see him in a unification with Jamel Herring who is in the same promotional stable as him. He has a decent resume at Super feather and will be fighting Oscar Valdez next who I think he will beat a lot easier than people might think.

The second fighter is Kenshiro Teraji who currently has 7 defences of his WBC Light Fly title. I know he will keep defending his belt as I think he wants to break some sort of record to do with the most defences. If you haven’t watched him yet I recommend you do as hes an excellent fighter.

Jerwin Ancajas is next up with 8 defences of his IBF Super Flyweight title. Ancajas hasn’t shown much ambition to fight the other champions so we can expect him to keep fighting people he is expected to beat and rack up more defences.

Moving on to the fighter with the most defences we get to Chayaphon Moonsri. He has defended his belt an incredible 12 times without ever unifying. He is fighting at minimum weight where its hard to find a lot of worthy opponents but he has still successfully beat everyone put in front of him. I don’t think he will have many more defences as he has talked about retirement in the past and he is also now 34 and at minimum weight that is ancient.

Should Billy Joe Saunders be punished for his domestic violence “joke”

This has been the most discussed topic in boxing this week largely due to there being nothing else to talk about. Saunders posted a video a few days ago giving instructions on how to hit your wife or girlfriend when your annoyed because your stuck with them in quarantine.

He wasn’t being serious with the video and was clearly joking but in my opinion making jokes about domestic violence is distasteful at the best of times much less the ones we are in now. With everyone being stuck indoors victims of domestic violence are more at risk than normal as they are constantly with their abuser with no breaks. Saunders making this video at this time was a stupid thing to do and I don’t know why someone near him didn’t tell him not to post it.

If this was the first time he’d made a mistake like this then I think suspending his boxing license and potentially stripping his world title would be a bit harsh as people make mistakes. The problem is he has continuously done it and hasn’t learn’t from his mistakes at all. At some point there has to be consequences for peoples actions and in this case Saunders might finally learn that not everything is a joke. He also told an airport that one of his mates had Corona Virus and got them kicked off the plane and stranded all as a “joke”. If you find it funny to screw your mates over that badly and also make domestic violence jokes at a time like this then you need to get your head looked at.

Hes had plenty of chances and yet continues to hurt his career because he can’t think before he posts things online. I don’t know how you can be so stupid to continuously do things like this especially when your close to the biggest fight of your career.

I’m also not a fan of how set up it was when he went to donate supplies to the NHS. For some reason he gave them water which makes zero sense but can we be surprised when it was just a quick pr stunt. They had multiple cameras all from different angles and then it just happened to be uploaded to IFL who are associated with MTK who manage Saunders. I’m sure he does do charity work but don’t try and pull a PR stunt after he does something stupid its insulting that they would think that people can’t work out whats going on.

Hopefully this finally gets Saunders to get his act together but in my opinion he hasn’t been the same in the ring since he had the nasal spray incident and hes always had questionable morals outside the ring. Hes a great boxer but perhaps not so great of a guy.

Who would fight for the vacant IBF middleweight title?

Due to the Corona Virus there is a chance that Canelo will not fight Billy Joe Saunders and will instead skip straight to a third fight with GGG. This would likely mean that their fight would be at 168 pounds and GGG would give up his IBF middleweight title. If the fight was at middleweight then GGG would still be stripped because he wouldn’t be facing his mandatory challenger. People have been speculating on whether this would happen but haven’t looked at who would actually fight for that vacant title.

Kamil Szeremeta

The first person in line for the title is Kamil Szeremeta a 21-0 fighter from Poland who has been operating at top European level but hasn’t really entered the world scene yet. He is mandatory to the title and so will 100% fight for it whether GGG vacates or not. Judging by his record you would think he is feather fisted but he does have decent power but not enough to hurt or KO top competition. Hes a good boxer but I don’t think he will beat the other top middleweights however he has a good chance of winning if GGG vacates or if GGG is even more washed than in his last fight.

Patrick Wojcicki

The second person who will fight for the title is Patrick Wojcicki a 14-0-1 German fighter. He like Kamil is a decent boxer but also doesn’t seem to have top level power. He has beaten a good European name in Ronny Mittag and has underrated wins versus Sven Elbir and Marcelo Fabian Caceres. He was also a 2012 Olympian and has good amateur pedigree.

If these two did fight for the title I think it would be a highly competitive fight and if i’m honest I’d rather see them fight each other for the title rather than GGG demolish them like he has so many others.

Super Welterweight is the best domestic division in the UK.

One of the things I most enjoy watching in boxing are fights at domestic level because firstly I can go to them and secondly we often get great story lines and fights. 154 is one of the most competitive divisions at domestic level in the UK and it feels like anybody could beat anybody on their night. We’ve already had some good match ups including Anthony Fowler versus Scott Fitzgerald and Ted Cheeseman versus Kieron Conway and also Scott Fitzgerald. We have the potential for all these guys to just continuously fight each and provide great fights with the eventual winner being close to a title shot.

I’m going to name a few guys in the division and then say what fights I personally want too see them in. Hopefully we can get them all to fight each other multiple times but I’d be happy with just half of the fights I want.

First up is Scott Fitzgerald who has rose in popularity after beating Ted Cheeseman and Anthony Fowler last year. I’d like too see him versus James Metcalf who is currently 21-0 or a Anthony Fowler rematch as their first fight was great. If he carries on beyond domestic level I’d also be happy as he has got two big wins now so he can likely move on to bigger fights.

Second is Anthony Fowler who I want too see fight Ted Cheeseman because that was the fight that was being promoted for so long before both lost. I also want too see him in a rematch with Fitzgerald or a fight with Kieron Conway.

I’d like too see Kieron Conway in a rematch with Ted Cheeseman or fighting Scott Fitzgerald. I also wouldn’t mind him versus Troy Williamson.

I’d like too see James Metcalf fight Fitzgerald or Steven Donnelly as both fights are good stylistically. Though I really wouldn’t mind seeing him in with anyone at domestic level.

Troy Williamson is another fighter I don’t mind seeing fight anyone domestically however I especially want him versus Fitzgerald or Fowler. He was supposed to be fighting Steven Donnelly so hopefully that fight gets remade once everything gets back to normal.

I’d like too see Steven Donnelly versus Williamson or Cheeseman but like all the people on this list I just want too see them fight people domestically.

Champions that I think will lose this year.

As we go through this Corona Virus its increasingly hard to find things to write about so if my pieces are a bit smaller than usual I apologize.

I’ve looked at all the current champions we have in boxing and these are the ones that I think will lose this year due to one reason or another.

First on the list is Billy Joe Saunders which is one of the more obvious picks as hes facing Canelo which seems like an impossible task. Canelo is one of the best fighters on the planet while Saunders hasn’t looked great recently. He needs a big fight win or lose to truly cap off his career and the Canelo fight does that for him so hopefully that fight can get put back on once everything finishes.

Next up is Gennadiy Golovkin someone that people might not agree with me on but i’ll explain my reasons. Firstly hes 37 almost 38 and doesn’t look like the fighter he once was which might not be a problem versus his next opponent but if he fights Canelo later this year then he’ll likely lose and it may even retire him. Hes had massive amounts of amateurs fights and also lots of pro fights at the top level so its no wonder its catching up with him now. I think even if he doesn’t fight Canelo he has a good chance of losing if he faces anyone young with ambition and he has an off night.

Patrick Teixeira is one of the fighters that I didn’t think would win a world title and i’m glad he was able to achieve his dream especially be beating a good fighter in Carlos Adames where he was the underdog. I don’t think however that hes likely to win his next fight though if he proves me wrong I would be very happy. No one holds on to their titles at 154 for very long and I don’t think Teixeira will be any different.

The next fighter is Teofimo Lopez who will be fighting Lomachenko next. Lopez has the ability and the size to pull it off but I personally think he’ll lose though it will be a good experience for him.

The next fighter is Rey Vargas who has been a champion for a while. I think he’ll lose his title because he must be struggling to make weight at this point and its rumored he’ll be fighting Luis Nery soon who I think has the capability to beat him. If he isn’t struggling to make weight he could continue winning for a while more however due to his size.

John Riel Casimero will likely lose his next bout versus Naoya Inoue which is why I have picked him. Hes a very good fighter but hes going against someone who I think is elite and while it might be competitive I think Inoue will stop him.

The last champion I think will lose this year is Moruti Mthalane. One of the reasons I think he will lose is because hes 37 and at Flyweight that is ancient. I also think he will likely unify versus Julio Cesar Martinez and lose that fight though if he was a decent sized underdog I would back him as hes a very good fighter.

Some of these will make it through this year being world champions and some others that looks like they will make it for a long time will be upset by people we didn’t expect to win and thats one of the reasons I love boxing. You don’t know who will win until you fight the fights.
