Gamboa : From Champion to journeyman

Yuriorkis Gamboa in his prime was a very good fighter who was seen as the best in his division at least at featherweight. He moved up in weight to super feather where he picked up an interim title but didn’t make much of a splash in the division. Up to this point his career was on a perfect trajectory upwards with only minor blips of being knocked down and not getting to fight Juan Manuel Lopez after the fight was built up for so long. The turning point in his career was deciding to move up to Lightweight and fight Terence Crawford. While it’s admirable to challenge yourself and he certainly did that by taking the Crawford fight its also a quick way to derail your career needlessly. After he got stopped by Crawford he struggled in fights he shouldn’t and got stopped by Robinson Castellanos thus ending the idea of him still being an elite fighter.

He’s carried on for a few years picking up wins over other past their best fighters while waiting for the sharks to stop circling and finally tear him and the remnants of his career apart. On December 28th of 2019 Gervonta Davis obliged him by knocking him down multiple times and eventually stopping him in was both seen as a mismatch before the fight and after. He’d finally got to the point where his name value was seen as worth the risk because the reality is that he’s an old fighter who probably should have retired a few years ago but still fights on in search of past glory which hes since lost. After the Davis fight most felt he would retire and having a fitting end to a long career by losing to an up and coming star who he performed as well as he could against especially considering he ruptured his Achilles in the second round. One last performance from an old warrior would have been a nice send off but in typical boxing fashion he’s now being used as a stepping stone for young fighters. Next in line was Devin Haney who won every round but looked silly in not being able to even drop Gamboa who has been known for going down in his career. Finally comes the reason i’m writing this and why Gamboa is a good example of how the boxing industry uses up fighters until theirs nothing left and then repeats it again and again. Gamboa hasn’t won a fight in almost two years and has lost 24 rounds in a row in uncompetitive fights yet is still being used as a headliner versus Chris Colbert. Gamboa is now at the stage of his career where hes brought in to lose and isn’t expected to even win rounds but to simply give some of his lingering name value to whatever new fighter the promoter’s are trying to push. This isn’t a new thing in boxing but it’s still sad too see former world champions effectively become glorified journeymen at the end of their careers to prop up young fighters who really should be fighting their peers instead of old timers who should no longer be in the ring.

I would hope that after this fight Gamboa finally calls it a career as it’s a shame too see part of his legacy become being a measuring stick for the next generation. While it would be out of character I also think the boxing promoters could find their morals and stop booking Gamboa in fights he has little chance of winning simply because he used to be a world champion and buzzed Terence Crawford once.

Jose Zepeda versus Henry Lundy breakdown

I don’t see this as a particularly good fight and it’s more of a tune up fight for Zepeda before he gets a title fight next. Zepeda is one of the best Super Lightweights in the world and has shown impressive form in his recent fights. Henry Lundy is 37 and a career lightweight who is moving up for this fight. He’s lost at a lower level recently and is far from his prime at this point.

Henry Lundy

I think Jose Zepeda will win by knockout within seven or eight rounds due to being a natural 140 pounder and also clearly being more skilled at this stage of his career.

Elvis Rodriguez versus Kenneth Sims Jr breakdown

This is an excellent fight between fast rising prospect Rodriguez and quality domestic US fighter Kenneth Sims Jr. Rodriguez looked stellar in his first 11 fights but looked like he ran out of ideas in his last one even though he clearly won. Both fighters are technically good and Sims Jr is an underrated fighter in my opinion and certainly has a chance to win this fight.

Kenneth Sims Jr

I think in the end Rodriguez’s power will make the difference as while both will be connecting I think Rodriguez will have more effect and the judges will notice that. Rodriguez will likely win a decision after eight rounds.

Javier Martinez versus Calvin Metcalf breakdown

This is a slight step up in competition for Martinez who is only 3-0 but had a good amateur background. Metcalf is a journeyman but he has experience and comes to win though most of the time hes simply not good enough.

I think Javier Martinez should be able to outbox Metcalf over six rounds and win a decision due to his amateur background and better technical skills.

Robeisy Ramirez versus Ryan Lee Allen breakdown

This is a tune up fight for Ramirez who has already beaten better opponents than Allen who is a journeyman at this point. Ramirez is great technically but doesn’t throw a lot of punches. He’s accurate when he does and is very relaxed in the ring but is taking a while to get used to the pro’s after a very long amateur career. Ryan Lee Allen is a domestic fighter in the USA who has mostly lost in his steps up in competition but has performed well in those fights.

Ryan Lee Allen

I think Robeisy Ramirez will win a decision after six rounds due to being technically better and also being a lot more active recently.

River Wilson Bent versus George Farrell breakdown

This is a good first defence of Bent’s Midlands Area middleweight title as Farrell is undefeated and has barely lost a round so far in his career. Bent showed power in his last fight when he brutally knocked out Troy Coleman after a competitive first two rounds.

Bent clearly has power but like a lot of big punchers he doesn’t have the best defence though Farrell hasn’t shown much power himself so it probably won’t be a big issue in this fight. Farrell is decent technically but I think will lose a decision or get stopped late on because he lacks power and hasn’t fought at this level before while Bent has.

Kaisee Benjamin versus Martin Harkin breakdown

This is a good domestic fight in the UK between two English level fighters. I believe this is an eliminator for the British title so there’s more than just a win or loss on the line. Kaisee Benjamin has faced a solid level of competition throughout his career and has picked up a win on the road before. I am slightly surprised he still has to fight an eliminator considering the people he’s fought but the British title is a prestigious belt so it makes sense. Martin Harkin has had a few big fights and only fell short in his last fight against a good fighter in Michael Mckinson.

I think this fight will likely be fought evenly for most of the fight but Kaisee Benjamin will be able to do just enough to win a decision due to his boxing skills. Harkin likely has more power but I don’t see that as being a major factor in this fight.

Josh Taylor versus Jose Carlos Ramirez breakdown

This is one of the best fights that will happen this year and is a match up i’m really looking forward too. This fight has all the belts on the line at 140 with the winner becoming the undisputed champion at super Lightweight.

Josh Taylor can fight both on the inside and outside and likes to get into fire fights even if it sometimes doesn’t benefit him. He’s good technically and clearly has power though isn’t normally a one punch KO artist. Jose Carlos Ramirez is good technically and has power himself which is why this is a great match up. I think Josh Taylor has looked better in their respective recent fights and in my opinion has shown hes more gritty and willing to go for it. Ramirez normally comes on strong late in fights but struggles to put a solid twelve rounds together in my opinion.

Jose Carlos Ramirez

I think in a competitive fight Josh Taylor will win a decision due to being better on the inside and having the will to really go for it when the going gets tough.

Otar Eranosyan versus Jose Argel breakdown

This is a decent fight between two unbeaten fighters with similar records. Otar Eranosyan is 7-0 with five knockouts while Jose Argel is 8-0 with 2 knockouts. Otar Eranosyan only went pro last year but has been fighting regularly and seems to be getting fast tracked to an extent. Jose Argel hasn’t fought since 2019 and hasn’t faced a great level of competition yet. Eranosyan hasn’t fought anybody good yet either but even some of his competition is better than Argel has faced.

Jose Argel

I think Otar Eranosyan’s relentless pressure and body punching will be too much for Argel who hasn’t fought for a while and hasn’t shown any real power. Eranosyan should win by knockout within five or six rounds due to having more power and having a style which is suited to dealing with rusty fighters easily.

Dmitry Kudryashov versus Evgeny Romanov breakdown

This is an interesting fight because it’s between two past their prime fighters who have a lot of power but questionable chins. Kudryashov is a glass cannon and will either win this fight by knockout or get knocked out himself. He doesn’t really have an inbetween. Romanov was a good amateur but has progressed slowly in the pro’s and this is his first real step up.

Evgeny Romanov

I think this could go either way but I do lean towards Kudryashov as he has more experience and I think he’ll catch Romanov and knock him out at some point in the fight. This fight is at the new weight class Bridgerweight which the WBC made but that doesn’t really matter as it’s not really an actual weight class yet.
