It has come out today that WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade will be facing Liam Williams as his mandatory challenger sometime in the summer. This is surprising as Jaime Munguia is the mandatory as he was the champion at the weight below and moved up. I presume what happened is that Munguia’s team told the WBO that they didn’t want to be ordered to fight Andrade and so the WBO went to the next highest contender which is Liam Williams. I personally think this is fair as Williams versus Atlantez Fox was supposed to be a final eliminator but the WBO changed their minds about it a few days before the fight.
I like this fight a lot as I personally think Williams will be the best opponent Andrade has fought at middleweight so far and it should test both fighters. The only worry I have for this fight is that Andrade goes into complete safety first mode and tries to earn a decision which could lead to a boring fight which would be a shame as Williams is normally a very exciting fighter.
Outside of the other champions I think this is the best fight that Andrade can realistically be in and I also think Williams is the most deserving of a title shot right now. A lot of the division have lost recently and haven’t had a comeback fight and others are already scheduled to fight each other. A Jermall Charlo fight isn’t going to happen as he will fight either James Kirkland or Chris Eubank Jr next in my opinion. Golovkin is fighting Kamil Szeremeta next whenever they finally get around to announcing it.
I’ve seen some negative reaction to this announcement but I think thats because they don’t know how good Williams is and that this is an excellent fight. I’m personally very much looking forward to it as I like Williams as a fighter and i’m excited too see him get his opportunity to become world champion.
